What Do You Want This to Do?

You know how you feel when it's all really working, right?  That special feeling of flowing with it all, and everything seems so easy.

It's a great thing when all the pieces play together, and the music of life gets you going right where you want to be.  Creative life holds moments like this. that's what it is all about, getting into the groove of the time and adding to it, like you are riding on a nice little boat down the river.

So, when you set out to do something or to write something, what is the feeling you want to create?  Is it  something serious?  Are you looking to lighten the mood, or to give people something they need to get something done?

It's so important to know the answers to these questions. When I start working with a client for writing, whether it is something they want to write, or something I will write for them, the very first question I ask is...
What do you want this to do?

The form is determined by the function.  If you want to cheer people up, you don't tell them stories of stress and struggle.

When you are looking to persuade someone of an idea or a concept, you will need to present the idea in a way that makes it easy for the person to understand and accept.

So, ask yourself:

What exact point do I want to make?

Who is the person who can "get" that point and take it to the next level?

How do I connect with that person?

Remember: form follows function, and so when you know what that function is, you are ready to construct the form.

Make it one that your reader recognizes and identifies with, and then your message will have that good old fashioned swing.  Book?  Blog?  Email? Or something else?
