Tools of the Trade

It's midnight...do you know where your tools are?

Keeping track of your tools and keeping them in good shape comes naturally when you love what you are doing.  Having a kit that suits your style makes it all flow more easily and gives you an edge when it comes to the fine distinctions that make for good writing.

What tools are those?  Well, there's your mind, first and foremost.  You need to have a series of habits that support you in stepping into your work with the right energy level. Being consistent with the way you approach writing is  one of the best ways to be sure you don't get stuck in a place that isn't serving you.

And then there are the skills yo learn and practice.  It's known that practice is the way you train your nervous system to respond to the commands of your mind. Every tine you perform an action, such as sitting down at your keyboard in a particular type of mental state, the habit of doing it is reinforced throughout your whole process.

Knowing the limits of each skill set is important, too.  My art mentor used to say quite often that "If it's hard, it's because you are using the wrong tool."  Understanding the right method for each type of message and applying the tools that suit it is the way to success.

If you want to really get good at doing something, you have to take the time to listen to the marketplace for our ideas. what are peopple wanting to know, to have, to do?

What makes those things that they want to have?

Where did they hear about them?

Who told them that therse things were good?

Look at these questions and you begin to have an idea of wha'ts important to your audience.

If you are selling a product or service, knowing the exact concerns of your audience is the first thing you need to know.  Then you can examine how these people communicate,  their language in the market.

In my system for writing, the Three golden Apples, this element of the writing is the first thing we cover.

I call this Golden Apple #1:

Speak in the Language of Your Market.

The three part system is creaeted from my study of the classic tools of rhetoric, and how they fit together.  From simplicity we create variety and nuance.  Here are the three elements:

Language

Choice

Outcomes
